We first learned of Amy
because of an emergency call from an Animal Control officer. The officer
said that they had just taken Amy -- almost lifeless -- from the steps
of an apartment complex. Could we help? It was late in the afternoon, so
we asked if Animal Control could meet us at our veterinarian's office
with her. We were shocked at her condition and feared she wouldn't make
it. Amy was coated in poop and was matted beyond belief. Once shaved
down, her tiny bones stuck out and her legs looked like they were
sticks. She was
given emergency hydration and food (which we were thrilled she ate), but
then she became listless. Amy's vet and the other staff were eager to
help. One went to the blood bank in Annapolis during a snow storm
because Amy needed blood transfusions for severe anemia. Amy's vet
actually took her home over the weekend rather than risk leaving her in
hospitalization.
Amy has started to respond to treatment and is eating well. She needs to
gain quite a bit of weight -- to all of at least 10 lbs! Now that we
think she's out of the woods, we are posting her for adoption. She will
need continued veterinarian care, and just as importantly TLC. For now,
we are going to accept applications for Amy, but she will not be at an
adoption show any time soon. If interested in Amy, feel free to submit
an online application and we will get back to you as to when Amy is
ready to leave hospitalization. DAWG will financially cover Amy's care
until she is back on her tiny feet.
