Great Reads Reveal Insights About Intelligence
Dog Tips is still on hiatus pending my figuring out how a better way to resume regular
emailings to the several thousand folks on the list. But I had to tell you about a new book,
one of the best works of fiction I’ve ever read, and the author’s real-life inspirations -- a virtual treasury of insights about teaching and understanding canines, as well as non-human animal intelligence. These are must reads. The book is “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” which is earning rave
reviews even from literary sages who have no particular interest in animals. Author David Wroblewski tells, with exquisite beauty and suspense, of a mute-but-hearing boy’s relationship with dogs being raised by his family and the life-upending drama that ensues when his trouble-making uncle reappears. The family business involves breeding dogs not for looks or work traits, but for intelligence and disposition. At around 550 pages, I figured it would take me a couple of weeks, but I couldn’t put it down. And I wish the story continued. It may be the only work of fiction I’ve ever planned to re-read, cover to cover. On the book’s website, the author has included a section of extraordinary books and weblinks to videos, articles and other resources about animal intelligence, communication, and training. Every one deserves reading, watching, listening.

Another new book I whole-heartedly recommend is FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS: The Rise
of the Animal Protection Movement by Kathryn Shevelow
